科目三 (kē mù sān), or “subject three,” initially referred to the road test in China’s driving license test. But recently, a “kemusan” dance routine has gone viral, with little connection to driving. The dance is believed to have originated from a clip of a wedding dance in southern China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, which spurred netizens to joke that locals there are all subject to three tests in their lives: singing folk songs, eating rice noodles (a popular local snack), and dancing. Clips featuring employees of Haidilao, China’s most popular hot pot brand, performing the dance have further amplified its popularity.
