The ride-hailing driver suspected of murdering a female passenger jumped into a river and died, according to police in Henan province.
In a statement Saturday, Zhengzhou police said DNA testing confirmed the identity of the body found floating in a river as the suspect, Liu Zhenhua. Police had been looking for him since May 6, but traffic surveillance video showed Liu had jumped into the river that morning.
Though Didi Chuxing, the ride-hailing service Liu used, apologized and offered a reward for him following the murder, public backlash focused on the company’s loose driver approval procedures. Its customer review system was found to be full of drivers commenting on passengers’ appearances.
On Friday afternoon, Didi announced a one-week suspension of its Hitch service.
