A romance set against the backdrop of India’s toilet revolution will soon show in China as Hindi movies maintain their strong foothold in the country.
“Toilet: A Love Story” follows a newlywed who threatens to walk out of her marriage when she finds their house has no toilet. The movie comments on issues that plague women, including harassment and rape, amid the lack of lavatory access in many parts of India. Star Akshay Kumar continued the sanitation theme in “Pad Man,” a film that tackles menstruation taboos.
Titled “Toilet Hero” in Chinese, the film — premiering June 8 — will be the fifth Indian blockbuster released in China this year. Aamir Khan’s “Secret Superstar” and “Dangal” recently smashed box office collections in the country, which limits how many foreign films can screen. (Image: IC)
