Huawei Researching 6G Cellular Technology in Canada: Report
Huawei has begun researching 6G cellular technology in Ottawa, Ontario, according to an exclusive report Tuesday from Canadian media outlet The Logic.
According to the report, the Chinese telecom giant confirmed to The Logic that it is working on developing 6G, or the sixth generation of cellular network technology, at its lab in the Canadian capital. The company is also “in talks with Canadian university researchers about working on development of the next-generation wireless system,” according to the report.
“5G is very new, and looking at 6G is part of the so-called 5G evolution,” Song Zhang, Huawei’s vice president of research strategy and partnership in Canada, is quoted as saying.
Sixth Tone was unable to reach Huawei by time of publication, and the company has not commented publicly on Tuesday’s report.
In May, the Trump administration blacklisted Huawei from obtaining technical components from the United States on national security grounds — a move that was met with full-throated condemnation by both the telecom giant and the Chinese government. After the ban, companies like Google, Intel, and Qualcomm severed ties with Huawei, leaving the Chinese company without suppliers for essential products, such as Google’s Android operating system. Last week, however, Huawei unveiled its own mobile operating system, Harmony OS.
Months before its blacklisting, Huawei announced in February that it planned to hire 200 staff in Canada in a bid to expand its research and development team by 20%.
In a speech at this year’s Boao Forum for Asia — an annual meeting of leaders in government, business, and academia in the Chinese island province of Hainan — Yang Chaobin, the president of Huawei’s 5G product line, predicted that 6G technology will not arrive until 2030.
In the meantime, 5G is poised to take the world by storm, with several Chinese phone makers launching or preparing to launch 5G phones. Last month in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, Huawei debuted its first 5G smartphone available to consumers: The new Huawei Mate 20X 5G will be released to the wider Chinese market later this month.
