3 Dead, 5 Missing After Container Ship Sinks in Yangtze Estuary
Update: This story has been updated with the latest developments.
At least three people have died and five remain missing after a container ship sank in the Yangtze River estuary near Shanghai, according to state broadcaster China Central Television. Sixteen people were believed to be in danger following the accident on Sunday, CCTV said.
The container ship collided with another boat whose engine had failed, according to CCTV.
Sunday’s incident comes just over three months after nine people were killed when an oil tanker collided with a cargo ship near the Yangtze River estuary in August. Five more who were reported missing were never found.
In 2018, another collision between a Chinese cargo ship and a Panama-registered, Iranian-owned oil tanker killed all 32 crew members aboard both vessels. The incident raised concerns over how light crude oil leaked after impact would impact the estuary’s fish and other marine life.
