The Artist Monkeying Around With China’s Monkey King
At the age of 3, Chen Jianzhou suffered from a fever and lost his hearing. In the silent world, he found his passion in painting and is now rising to become one of the most promising young artists in the Chinese contemporary art scene.
Drawing inspiration from the famous Chinese novel “Journey to the West” and artists such as Andy Warhol, Yayoi Kusama, and Vincent van Gogh, Chen’s version of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, has struck a chord with young collectors. In his take, Chen incorporates elements of his own likeness into Sun Wukong’s cartoon features, putting a unique spin on the amusing and mischievous monkey.
“I hope my Wukong brings joy to everyone, and that China’s pop art can be seen by the whole world.”
