“China’s Lab,” a new video mini-series produced by Sixth Tone’s sister publication The Paper, takes a closer look at the people, companies, and research institutions in China that are driving forward progress in the fields of science and technology.

The fourth and last episode of the series looks at the interface that exists between innovation in basic science and the commercial world of industry. Research centers like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology offer a shining beacon for the ways in which commercial interests can fuel advances in science without stifling or controlling creative freedom. But what are the prospects that such relationships could thrive in China, considering the rigidity of its experimental science infrastructure?
