90s Kids: The Fixed-Gear Cyclist

“Treat your passion as a career; don’t treat your career as a passion. There’s no point working only for money.” After hearing this, Taco decided to quit his job in a public relations agency and began a career of assembling fixed-gear bikes in F5 — a studio that personalizes bikes.

Taco always joins the weekly night cycles hosted by his studio, where they soar through the narrow back lanes in Shanghai’s old city. Taco believes that people who like riding fixed-gear are more open-minded. They have to get used to different ways of braking — many of them even have to relearn how to ride.

“Some say they like the sound of spinning tires; some like the feeling of the tire splitting the wind. Me — I like the feeling of freedom,” says Taco.
